For many cell phone customers, every minute counts. So, what do you do when your precious cell minutes are eaten up by unsolicited telemarketing calls? Get on the Do Not Call list. California offers both online and telephonic registration for the No Call registry, which requires that telemarketers remove your phone number within 30 days.

Telemarketer No Call List

The Telemarketer No Call list is a database of consumers that have opted out of receiving sales calls from unknown businesses. Companies that conduct phone sales operations are required to download the list every 30 days, and remove numbers on the registry from lists of numbers to call for sales.

Charities, debt collectors and businesses with whom you have an established relationship are excluded from the No Call list. In other words, you’ll still be receiving calls asking for charitable donations, a payment on your overdue credit card or for you to renew your subscription to a magazine. The telemarketer registry is intended to prevent unsolicited sales calls, and will stop you from getting a call from Acme Sales that extols the virtues of their new gadget that combines a potato peeler with a DVD player in a handy pocket-size edition.

Federal Do Not Call Registry

Register for the Federal Do Not Call Registry online or by phone at (888) 382-1222. Although no-call participants used to be required to re-register every five years, the procedure has been amended so that telephone numbers remain on the list until they are disconnected or reassigned. Basically, once you submit your phone number, it stays on the Do Not Call list until you take it off or change your number. If you do change your telephone number or move, resubmit your phone number to the registry to ensure that you don’t get unwanted sales calls.

Do Not Call List California

The Do Not Call List for California is coordinated with the national list. If you have already registered through the state of CA, the attorney general’s office will forward your information to the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC oversees the national telemarketing registry, and will add your phone number to the national list.

You should stop receiving unsolicited sales calls within 30 days after submitting your cell or home phone number to the list. If you are still receiving calls after 30 days has passed, file a complaint with the FTC. Fill out the simple online form and submit to alert the FTC of the issue.
